The Nakamichi RX-505 was one of the most unique cassette recorders ever designed, and featured a swiveling cassette holder that eliminated the need to reverse the direction of the tape when playing the second side. Nakamichi called this feature UDAR, for Unidirectional Auto Reverse. By rotating the cassette physically, and only moving the tape in one direction, Nakamichi was able to design a machine that did away with azimuth errors common to other decks that merely reversed the direction of tape travel just by reversing the motors. Despite this bulkier, and obviously more complicated mechanism, their single-direction cassette drive worked well, and continues to work well on this particular model, which has a serial number of 06723. The top and sides are very clean and free of visible scratches or scuffs. There are a few scuffs on the rear panel near the remote control jack but these are minimal. There is ONE annoying scratch on the top of the front facade, near the cassette tray. It's not very large, maybe a quarter of an inch long, but it is there and you can evaluate it for yourself by looking at that picture. Nakamichi took care to ship this deck double-boxed, so what you see in the photograph is actually the outer box and the inner box is free of any tape residue or other wrapping debris. But for added security, I've obtained a third outer box measuring 22x17x12 inches that perfectly encloses the two original Nakamichi boxes, and that is how I will ship it. I bought this deck new for around $300.00in the early 1980's--fairly big money then! It has been in storage since we moved six years ago, but everything was working great before that. Due to the extended inactivity, it probably will need lubrication to play properly. It doesn't have a reverse option -- only plays left to right. Dimensions are 17"W, 14"D, 3-3/4"tall I still have the owner's manual, which is in six European languages including English.
