NAKAMICHI ZX-9 CASSETTE DECK SUPER TUNED EDITION Picture(s) and Description:

Up for auction is a rare, original Japanese market (100V) Nakamichi ZX-9, Super Tuned Edition (Gold lettering) which may have an important piece of history attached to it. I’m auctioning this on behalf of my brother who bought it abroad from an elderly Japanese gentleman several years ago. The person claimed that this particular deck is one of the actual ZX-9s used in the Nakamichi (Japan) studios for their master recordings---I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the claim, but I can not substantiate it. Though I am no connoisseur of such classics; I have read a few interesting remarks about the ZX-9; 1) It was a Nakamichi ZX-9 on which Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ was mastered. 2) Nakamichi themselves used the ZX-9 and not the Dragon for mastering their demo tapes. 3) Considered by many to be the finest recording cassette deck, better than the Dragon and with greater (manual) control than the CR-7.(Read numerous reviews on the net) As can be seen from the pictures, the cosmetic condition is quite good for a classic of this vintage. There is a very small scuff mark on the left top side and left top corner (which can easily be touched up but I have left it all original). Also one of the small selector knobs is missing (which I presume can be easily obtained online) and which I have replaced with a similar sized (albeit round) knob. All original selector covering caps are included. Functionally, the cassette deck plays and winds the tape fine. However, the left channel level seems to be slightly higher than the right. The deck also makes a grating sound starting and stopping with every button (I do not know whether this is normal? simple lack of lubrication? due to protracted lack of use?). Since I know nothing about cassette decks mechanically, I have never taken off the cover and I do not know what is the inside condition, whether it is pristine or repaired and the auction is AS IS WHERE IS, NO RETURNS. Thanks and happy bidding! .
